5 Signs Your Windows Need Attention Before Winter

October 27, 2026

A Michigan house has a way of telling you when colder weather arrives.

One room suddenly feels chillier than the rest. You notice a draft when you sit near the window. Or the window that barely got opened all summer suddenly becomes noticeably difficult to operate.

Those little annoyances are worth paying attention to before winter settles in.

MANS Lumber & Home identifies drafts, wood deterioration, fogged glass, cracks, difficulty operating windows and visibly aging frames as common signs that windows may need attention. [manslumber.com]

Not every symptom automatically means you need new windows. But each one gives you a reason to take a closer look.

1. You Can Feel a Draft

Start with the simplest test: comfort.

Does one room feel noticeably colder? Can you feel cool air when you’re sitting near a window?

MANS Lumber & Home points to rooms that won’t stay warm as one of the common clues homeowners notice with older or inefficient windows. [manslumber.com]

There’s more happening with a modern window than simply putting a piece of glass between you and the weather. Andersen Windows & Doors explains that double-pane glass uses the space between panes as an additional insulating layer, while Low-E glass limits heat transfer. [andersenwindows.com]

The important thing is not jumping immediately from “I feel a draft” to “I need every window replaced.”

First, figure out what’s causing the problem.

2. You See Fog Between the Panes

A little condensation isn’t necessarily the same thing as persistent cloudiness between the panes of glass.

MANS Lumber & Home specifically identifies fogged glass as a sign of seal failure. [manslumber.com]

If you’re cleaning both sides of the glass and that cloudy appearance isn’t going anywhere, it’s worth having the window evaluated.

This is one of those problems homeowners can get used to seeing every day. Eventually the cloudy window just becomes “that window.”

Don’t let it.

3. The Window Is Difficult to Open or Close

Windows aren’t supposed to require a workout.

If you’re pushing, pulling or negotiating with a window every time you try to use it, take notice.

Older wood windows can warp or deteriorate, making them difficult to open or close, and MANS includes difficulty operating a window among the signs homeowners should have evaluated. [manslumber.com]

It may not mean that every window in your home has reached the end of its useful life. That’s why evaluating the individual window and existing conditions matters.

4. The Frame Is Showing Its Age

When you’re checking your windows this fall, don’t look only at the glass.

Look at the entire window.

Are there cracks? Signs of deterioration? Is an older wood frame visibly worn? Does something simply look different than it did a few years ago?

MANS identifies wood deterioration, cracks and obviously aging frames among the warning signs homeowners should watch for. [manslumber.com]

Late fall is a natural time to make that inspection because colder weather can make window-related comfort problems much easier to notice.

Take a slow walk around the house and pay attention.

You don’t need to diagnose everything yourself. You just need to notice what’s changing.

5. One Room Never Seems Comfortable

Every house seems to have that room.

Everyone knows it.

It’s fine during part of the year, but once Michigan turns cold, the chair near the window suddenly isn’t anybody’s favorite place to sit.

If certain areas consistently feel uncomfortable, windows are one of the things worth investigating.

Energy-efficient window design can help with year-round comfort. Andersen Windows & Doors notes that appropriate glass options can help reflect heat during summer and retain heat during winter. [andersenwindows.com]

When you’re comparing replacement windows, don’t rely on looks alone either.

<Andersen Windows & Doors> recommends checking ENERGY STAR and National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) labeling. NFRC ratings allow homeowners to compare the energy performance of similar products. [andersenwindows.com]

Replacement Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Here’s something that’s easy to overlook when shopping for windows: the right replacement approach depends on the house.

MANS considers the existing window conditions, homeowner priorities, efficiency goals, aesthetics and budget when making recommendations. Depending on the situation, that may lead to a full-frame replacement or an insert. [manslumber.com]

Preserving the home’s architectural character matters too.

A replacement window shouldn’t look like somebody simply dropped a new window into an older house.

The goal should be a finished result that belongs there.

Fall Is a Good Time to Pay Attention

Michigan’s colder weather has a funny way of exposing little home problems that were easy to ignore in July.

So listen to your house.

Check the windows. Look at the frames. Open and close them. Pay attention to rooms that suddenly feel colder.

Everything may be working exactly as it should.

But if you’re noticing drafts, fogged panes, deterioration or windows that don’t operate properly, having them evaluated now can help you understand what’s actually going on.

MANS Tip: When you’re comparing replacement windows, look beyond appearance. Consider the existing opening, installation approach, frame and glass options, and ENERGY STAR and NFRC performance information before making your decision. [manslumber.com], [andersenwindows.com]
